Gary Messina

I grew up in upstate New York just outside the Adirondacks, a big part of my childhood was being outside and going on long hikes and camping trips with family. I competed in cross country, Nordic Skiing and track all through middle and high school. We seemed to have more trails than any other school district in the region so when I went to study and compete at Brockport in Rochester NY I noticed how influenced I had been by the forests and rivers I was fortunate enough to take for granted growing up. I had a semi successful college running career setting the indoor 5k and 8k XC records at my small DIII school but my ambitions were outside the oval. I enjoyed a few years between ski bumming in Jackson Hole, working a summer in Zion and then Grand Teton NP, then thru-hiking the PCT in 2017 before ending up in Salt Lake to go back to school and get back into competitive running again, but shifting focus to where it feels more like play, in the mountains. Other than running I am a PTA, love to ski most of the winter and pretend to know how to climb sometimes.
